There is some new encouraging news from Finland.
A few years ago the Finnish Bowhunting association estimated that the number of Finnish bow hunters to be between 4 000-5 000.
- We always used to say that it must be over 5 000 bow hunters. Says Juha Kylmä
- Now we have the results of a fresh study conducted (2009) by Anna-Liisa Toivonen at Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute
"The Profile of Hunter".

The survey shows the number of hunters using bow and arrow is 8 900 and they have 10 900 hunting bows!!
- These numbers does not include target, 3D or regular/hobby archers.
- And these 8 900 are certified hunters!! Juha continues
Also, as a side note, did you know that in Finland they have 30 guns per 100 person.
This new study gives encouraging information that the number of bow hunters is growing rapidly in Finland.
According to "The Profile of Hunter" survey, 8 900 certified hunters are using bow and arrow for hunting. Also, the same group has nearly 11 000 hunting bows.

As for comparison with Sweden, who is still working for a legalization of bow hunting,
EBA asked Vice President of the Swedish Bowhunting association (Stefan Skarp)
How many bow hunters do SBJF think there is in Sweden today?
- Approximately 1500, but there is no statistics on this, SBJF currently have 400 members, and we are seeing a growth with 50-100 new members each year!
How many bows do you think exists in Sweden that is used for hunting?
- Approximately 3000 says Stefan Skarp
In Sweden there is almost 300,000 hunters, and if and when bow hunting becomes legal in Sweden, the expected number of bow hunters would be between 3000 to 5000 depending on which games will become legal to harvest.
